Crayfish are widely distributed around the world from Australia, New Zealand, Papua,
America, Japan, China and Europe. The species which have been widely cultivated include those from
Australia such as redclaw (Cherax Quadricarinatus), Yabbie (Cherax destructor) and Marron
(Cherax tenuimanus) and also Procambarus clarkii from the US. Of these, redclaw proved to
be the most well suited to cultivation.
Redclaw superior physical, biological and commercial attributes make it
an excellent candidate for aquaculture. It is proven to be a physically robust species with a
simple life-cycle, requires simple foods and is economical to produce.
Recently, consumers worldwide shows an increasing health-related concerns from the consumption of intensively aquacultured products such as tiger shrimps (P. Monodon) and white shrimps (L. Vannamei) where antibiotics are often used while the price of wild-caught sea lobsters are increasing consistently due to a depleted supply from the oceans.
The aquaculture of redclaw can be the solution to this problem.
The texture and flavour of the flesh compares very favourably with other commonly eaten marine
crustaceans, and having the appearance of a lobster,
it is positioned at the premium end of the crustacean market spectrum. Furthermore,
it is a robust species which means that the use of antibiotics as medicine are almost
never necessary as long as the appropriate environment is provided.
Our farm guarantee a consistent supply of crayfishes, produced in clean water and free from
medical and chemical additives at an affordable price.
